Miles to Go
2022, Audible
Until the late 1960s and early 70s, women in the United States were prohibited from running road races—everything from 5Ks to marathons. It wasn’t until 1984 that the Olympics included a women’s marathon.
For the 50th anniversary of Title IX, I partnered with the winner of the first Olympic marathon, Joan Benoit Samuelson, to tell the unreported and action-packed story of women’s fight for the right to run.
Miles to Go foregrounds the first-person stories of many of the female pioneers of US running as it recounts, step by step and surge by surge, the first ever women’s Olympic marathon. The race was broadcast live on NBC and watched by millions around the world. Benoit-Samuelson’s incredible win is regarded as one of the most thrilling moments of competition in sports history.
